Pursuit Races
Appendix to the NSC Sailing Instructions for pursuit races.
- THE START
- The start times of each class will be listed on the course board at least 20 minutes before the first boat is due to start. Race Officer will choose a finish time and then calculate start times groups of vessels with similar Portsmouth Numbers. The race officer will use durations listed in one of the columns from an up-to-date table similar to the one below.
- Fast Boats - Slow Boats: Very slow boats will be racing for much longer than very fast boats. The committee may decide to run two competitions simultaneously; one for the faster boats, the other for the slower boats. Durations for each competition will be taken from different columns in the table Both competitions will finish at the same time.
- The start sequence will be indicated as follows:
- THE FINISH
- A few seconds before the finish, a line will be set up between a patrol boat and a marker buoy; a short distance ahead of the leading boat.
- At the planned race finish time, a long sound signal will be given to indicate the completion of the allocated time for the race. After the leading boat has passed through the line, the patrol boat will move backwards through the fleet and note the positions of the leading boats. Competitors should not attempt to overtake any boat after the finish signal has been sounded.
Assuming T is the start time of the first start (group with the longest duration).
Warning signal for 1st start T - 3m H Flag raised one short sound signal
Preparatory signal for 1st start T - 2m P Flag raised one short sound signal
1min signal for 1st start T - 1m P Flag lowered one long sound signal
1st start T H Flag lowered one short sound signal
Thereafter, each group will get 30 seconds warning before their starts.
30 seconds before the start - H Flag raised. One long sound signal
At the start - H Flag lowered. One short sound signal
