Youth Development Sessions

The reason for different sessions is because it became apparent that some kids just wanted to have a laugh and muck about which was great and lots of fun, but there were also kids wanting something more structured and were keen to work towards RYA stage.

Children can choose each week when they sign up as to whether they want to do the multi activity or the development training improvers sessions with structured learning session - we will then allocate and sort groups and instructors accordingly.

When signing up please set expectations and ensure your kids are aware of what each element consists of, if your kid just wants to jump off a SUP and you want them to learn to sail please discuss this with them first to set expectations based on what you have booked or it becomes difficult for our instructors.

All sessions this year run alternative Saturdays with Multi Activity Fun, Improver Sailing, Netley Nippers in the morning and then Improvers Sailing sessions, Youth Race Training and Fast youth Race Training in the afternoon. Please see the website for dates and booking

Youth Race Training

Course Details:

Also known informally as 'Babs' group' or 'the Feva group' is intended for young sailors aged 10-16 who are competent in singlehanders such as Teras or Toppers and are ready to learn to race in double-handers, or who are already sailing doublehanders. We generally sail in Fevas, although may use other boats as appropriate due to weather conditions, unequal numbers or to achieve a specific goal.

For the safety of the sailors, and for their enjoyment of the session, it is important to ensure you are booked into the best group for your level. Minimum requirements for this group are:

Able to sail upwind competently in a singlehander in a F4, including setting the sail appropriately and hiking out when it's windy.

Able to tack properly upwind eg: through 90 degrees

Able to sail downwind competently in a F4, including bearing away properly and setting the sail correctly.

Able to gybe successfully, using the sails and weight.

Able to set the sail correctly at all points of sail.

Able to launch and recover competently, and to right a capsized boat.

Each session with have a plan built around a particular skill eg:

Flying a spinnaker

Sailing to telltales upwind

Slowing down and speeding up

Starting

Communication between helm & crew

The focus for each session may be practiced through different exercises eg follow-my-leader, or tacking on a whistle, and will then be incorporated into short practice races, or the entire session may be coached through racing. The coaching team may also modify the session depending on weather or experience of the participants. Whilst we normally pair people up for the session, if we have unequal numbers we may have one sailor in the rescue boat with us and swap all the participants in and out of boats, in which case they will be sailing with different people.

There is no need to book a club Feva or other boat in advance. When we know who is on the course and what we are planning to do, we will allocate boats accordingly.

Sailing a double-handed dinghy can be a step up from a singlehander, which is why we recommend the minimum experience levels in a singlehander. Spinnaker experience is not required this is a skill introduced in the session as appropriate.

If you are unsure which session to book your young sailor we are more than happy to advise you. Please email admin@netleysc.co.uk and it will be forwarded to the appropriate group coaches.

Fast Youth Race Training

Course Details:

To help youth sailors transition into racing the 405 and 29er at club level.

Criteria for joining us:

Helms: 14+, keen to learn, must be able to race a Feva or similar boat, good tacking and gybing skills.

Crews: 14+, keen to learn, must have some trapezing experience and reasonable helm.

We reserve the right to sign post sailors to different sessions if we feel they don't have the right skills or attitude.

There is a scheme to 'hire' the 405s on a long-term basis but for those joining us in the 29ers at least one of each pair needs to own a boat. We do help people find helms and crews, but we prefer that they match themselves with sailors of a similar age and ability with a desire to race and the time to train together. This course is for our Netley Youth Sailors wishing to improve their 29er skills

Special requirements:

Ideally attendees should have their own boat or access to a boat - preferably. If you don't please contact Training@netleysc.co.uk first to confirm if they can team you up with someone

Course duration: 4hrs

No. of participants: 24

Age: 14+

£15 if club boat required
